The salt beacon
The Exumas have worn many faces in their colorful history, evolving from being an early home of the Lucayan Indians to a salt-mining colony, through haven for pirates, to cotton plantations and more. The Spanish arrived in the 16th century and began harvesting salt for shipping to various destinations in North America, notably Nova Scotia. Williams Town on Little Exuma was built around the salt industry and at one point employed hundreds of people in the salt ponds. Rolle Town tombs
As you travel along the Queen’s Highway south from George Town toward Little Exuma, the first major settlement you will meet is Rolle Town. In the middle of a secluded clearing in the town where goats contentedly graze are three tombs, relics of one of the great romantic legends of the island. The largest of the three tombs is shaped like a stone double bed with headboard and footboard.
