The Greasy Pole

October 11, 2010 was Discovery Day in the Bahamas (also known as Thanksgiving in Canada). On this day, celebrations happen throughout the islands. We attended the celebration in Williams Town in Little Exuma specifically because we had heard about the Greasy Pole Challenge or to the locals simply ‘The Greasy Pole’.

Here’s the gist… a bag with a ham, a 40-pounder of Bacardi Gold and about $200 in cash is tied to the top of a 30-foot pole. The pole is coated with a heavy coat of industrial grade red grease. The first person or team to get the goods at the top wins!
