Sands Beer
‘Jimmy’ Sands, whose family has a long heritage in the liquor and beverage business, opened the Bahamian Brewery and Beverage Company in 2007. Even before the first spade of dirt was turned for the 60,000 sq. ft. facility, Jimmy held a competition giving local residents the opportunity to find a name for the brewery’s first brew. A chance to win $3,000 produced nearly 4,000 names for a beer that hadn’t as yet even been brewed! ‘Sands’ was the winner and the name has become synonymous with quality Bahamian beverages ever since.
The Bahamian Brewery and Beverage Company currently produces five beverages:

Sands Beer, the first produced by the brewery, is a ‘truly Bahamian’ beer, brewed to quench the Bahamian thirst and creating a certain flair that had been missing in the Bahamian beer market. At first it was only to be distributed in the Island of Grand Bahama but after only a month on the market, it was already a national brand.

Strong Back Stout is a dark beer, rich in taste but doesn’t have a bitter after-taste. It is created by using roasted malts or roasted barley and is popular with the connoisseur who loves a dark flavor. Strong Back was awarded the Grand Gold Quality award from the International Monde 49th World Selection Awards.

High Rock is a premium lager, crisp and refreshing, with a bolder constitution. A longer maturation process is used, producing a slightly darker golden color. Brewed without sugar, giving a pure taste and a smooth finish, this one is much like a European beer.

Sands Light Beer is a light tasting beer –- and is light on the calories too! Definitely not light on the flavour, though!
- Triple B is a delicious non-alcoholic malt drink. Truly refreshing – and affordable too.
The brewery is built on 20 acres of land near the Grand Bahama Harbour, and houses a brewery tour facility, a retail store, a gift store and a beer garden for visitors. Two acres have been reserved for a future botanical garden.
